Electricity in Cambodia: Things You Need to Know Before Visiting


Anywhere you go you would probably need to stay connected. Your smartphones need to stay on, and your laptop and other appliances need the power to work. In short, you need to make sure you have access to electricity. So here we go things you need to know about electricity in Cambodia.


Is Electricity widely available in Cambodia?

According to the World Bank, there is 86.4% of the Cambodian population has access to electricity in the year 2020. 

As an insider, I can say that you don't have to worry about electricity availability unless you go to rural isolated areas. But there is an electricity shortage once in a while that usually lasts only 10-30minutes and sometimes worse it lasts a few hours or more and it rarely happens in the cities. 

Access to Electricity is not what to worry about in Cambodia today. You will have access to electricity easily and affordably.


Is the electricity good in Cambodia?

Electricity quality is acceptable in Cambodia. You would expect 24/7 service in the cities and many provinces.

But there is more to be improved as in some areas there is often Electricity shortage and it could destroy some electronic gadget. 



Is Electricity Shortage happen often in Cambodia?

Electricity shortages rarely happen these days in Cambodia compared to many years ago. The EDC Cambodia is working every day to improve the service and handle any issue as quickly as possible at any time of the day.


Is there Electricity available in rural Cambodia?

Many rural areas in Cambodia now have access to electricity and coverage is expanding every year so electricity coverage will not be a problem in the coming years.


What Electricity Voltage is used in Cambodia?

The standard Voltage in Cambodia is 230V with a 50Hz frequency.
A 230 Voltage system allows the power companies to use thinner wire for higher voltages and is used by countries in Europe and countries nearby Cambodia.


Will your electronic devices work well with Cambodia's electricity supply?

You should check your appliance to see if it is usable or if you need a voltage converter. Many electronic devices today will be compatible for use anywhere you go. How much does electricity cost in Cambodia?

Electricity is measured by Kwh in Cambodia and on average it cost around $0.15-$0.25 depending on the area you are in and the purpose and amount you are using. 

You won't have to pay for the electricity as a tourist in Cambodia unless you're renting a room that some owner requires you to do so. It will not cost much for your normal usage if the number goes strange you can check with the owner. The problem can be due to error measurement as they have that measurement in each room and only 1 bill from the EDC Cambodia to the whole building.


Which company is the main Electricity distributor in Cambodia?

Electricity is generated by a state-owned company mostly known as EDC (Electricité du Cambodge).
